Freedom to Transform

Curated as part of ‘The Memes‘ project. Inspired by the ‘freedom to transact’ meme I created this piece which was minted as card no. 333 in season 10 of the project.

There is an irresistible transformation that occurs between awareness and action. ‘Freedom to Transform’ recalls a piece of artwork I previously made about the risks and delights of travelling through portals. Gaining the freedom to transact by moving away from traditional financial institutions and embracing decentralised ecosystems is an utterly transformative portal to travel through. A process of breaking free, of taking back autonomy and of financial rebirth.

This process marking the death of the old paradigms and rebirth into the new is represented via the florals burying the barely visible skulls in the background. Mushrooms sprout from the main character as a nod to the life that flourishes in decay. The main character transforms and morphs into a new version of herself by spilling her old mindset. Her stitched mouth unsealed, her voice unbroken.

She is hooked into the network by cabled tentacles, the electricity of this connection to new nodes and modes of operating visible on her skin. Her hands embrace the gradient 6529 key and abundant Ethereum jewels as she becomes a birther of Bitcoin.

This is all witnessed by meme, by culture, by community. The pepes look on in awe and wonder at the transformation taking place. A world of freedom, fun, connection, autonomy and growth ready to welcome her when she is transformed and free.

There is a moment when something takes root and it changes you. It is rich and abundant and sweet and bright and more – it’s an undeniable flourishing of self.

Sahvolia

There is a place that feels like home. It smells of tangy flutter bugs and your warmth. It is calm amongst the chaos. Feels like familiarity on an alien world. Tuck me in where it feels like safety and ease and tenderness in a world filled with hate and fear and violence.

Title based on the phonetic spelling of the phrase ‘sa bhaile’ which is the Irish for ‘at home’. Created in response to a curation for ‘Love is Louder’ a queer pride themed exhibition held in Milan, 2023.
